Erika Rekis - Lululemon Designer

Erika Rekis - Lululemon Designer - Osei – Duro

What do you do? How did you get started?

I design functional leisure wear for athletic apparel brand lululemon. The brand is based in Vancouver, which is home to many athletic brands and also where I attended school. I never anticipated working for the company when in my program, however today it makes perfect sense. I love yoga and the integration of fashion and function is an interesting challenge.

What do you love most about your work?

Researching, traveling and collaborating!

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere! My friends, traveling, late night dance parties, books, in bottles of wine.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Starts with some morning yoga, then biking to work.  Followed by too many meetings and maybe some research, a fitting, or sketching. Then home to make dinner while listening to a podcast and snuggling with my kitty and bf.

Describe your perfect day off.

Sleeping in but not too late. Slooooowly making breakfast. Reading a magazine or book. Going for a hike or biking to the beach. Vintage shopping for housewares or buying a new plant. Meeting up with friends for dinner at one of Vancouver’s many yummy restaurants.

What advice do you have to offer someone who is just starting out?

This industry is all about relationships and connections. Make friends that you can trust.

How does the city you live in influence your creativity?

I think the Vancouver lifestyle influences my creativity. People here want to adventure into the mountains during the day and eat at delicious trendy restaurants in the evening. They appreciate balance in their life and want to own quality well designed products.

What are the top 3 places we should check out in Vancouver?

Wreck Beach, The Trout Lake Farmers Market, China Town.

Is there any music you’re loving right now?

Project Pablo and Evy Jane are bands that are both from Vancouver and are super awesome!

Recommend something to us!

Skinny dipping under the moon and stars is always nice!

What is your motto?

There are no mistakes only learnings.
