In the early 2000s my brother-in-law referred to women who dressed in a certain style as Tops. If you were paying attention then, you probably know exactly who I mean. The bottoms were simple, tight or loose, and the top was the focus. It was always sexy and flattering and often drapey. It showcased décolletage, or shoulders, or a back. Most of the time it was synthetic. Could be asymmetrical. It was a signature night out look, but it could make its way into the office, or even a dog walk. It was a commitment to boobs, and to framing the face. Whether a tank or a blouse or a button up, it could correct the body’s shape; padding sloped shoulders, gently drawing eyes away from a paunch. Tops were a medicine, a belief system.

At the time we laughed at the Tops, such a narrow vision of fashion, but I think I get it now. There is freedom in rules. Artisan, slow fashion, handmade, those are bonuses with our tops. Important bonuses, more important all the time. We’ve added sustainable to the rules. But the real work of the top is as a vehicle for the wearer's dreams. Give me ease, give me professionalism, give me confidence. Give me androgyny, or high femme. Give me tops! Ethical tops!
